How do I choose a Rolfer?

As with any profession, some practitioners of Rolfing® Structural Integration may be better than others for your particular situation.  No number of certifications, degrees, or years of experience can guarantee that one Rolfer will be better for you and your body than any other.  Here are some basic guidelines, though, that might help you in your search for a Rolfer that’s right for you.

  1. Check out websites and make phone calls.  Get to know the personality of your prospective Rolfers and see which ones seem to resonate the most with the way you think and speak.  You want to be comfortable with your Rolfer.
  2. Ask prospective Rolfers about your specific issues.  Make sure that the Rolfer you’re interested in booking with is able to handle what you’re bringing to the table.  If it’s something s/he can’t handle, it’s best to find out before you get started.
  3. Your Rolfer should be your guide toward better health, not a heavy-handed slavedriver.  If you leave sessions feeling like your Rolfer pounded on you without regard for your limits, it’s time to move on.  Bruises are a big red flag.
  4. For most conditions your symptoms should be gone or have shown some improvement in the first three sessions. If you are not experiencing an improvement, find another Rolfer — or a different therapy.
